What Is an Online Keyboard Tester?

An online keyboard tester shows how each key responds directly in your browser. When the page receives a keyboard event, the matching key lights up and remains marked as tested after you release it.

You can use this tool with a laptop keyboard, desktop keyboard, or mechanical keyboard. Testing happens locally in your current browser, with no software installation and no key history sent to a server.

How to Test Your Keyboard

Work through the keyboard in order so that missed or inconsistent keys are easier to notice:

  1. 1

    Press every key

Start with the function row, then test letters, numbers, navigation keys, arrow keys, and the numpad.

  2. 2

    Watch the key states

A held key appears in solid blue. After release, it changes to the tested state.

  3. 3

    Retest suspicious keys

Press them several times at a normal speed. If the browser still receives nothing, compare the result in another app or device before drawing a conclusion.

Common Keyboard Problems

A key that does not appear in the tester is not necessarily a hardware failure. Possible causes include:

  • Dust, a switch, or a key mechanism making inconsistent contact.
  • A USB connection, Bluetooth link, battery, or port problem.
  • Drivers, firmware, key-remapping software, or an input method intercepting the event.
  • The browser or operating system reserving a system shortcut before the page can receive it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I test laptop and mechanical keyboards?

Yes. The tool reads keyboard events delivered to the browser, so it works with built-in laptop keyboards as well as connected desktop and mechanical keyboards.

Why do some system keys not light up?

The operating system may handle shortcuts such as the Windows key, Alt + Tab, or Ctrl + Alt + Delete before the browser receives them. A missing browser event alone does not prove the key is faulty.

Does the website store what I type?

No. Test states are processed in your browser, and the page does not send the contents of your key presses to the server.

What should I do if a key does not respond?

Try the key in another application, check the connection, and restart the device. For an external keyboard, try another USB port or computer before investigating the hardware.
